In 1984 Ronnie Flood, founder of the city’s musicpaper Merseysound “had the idea of putting together a compilation of the best local groups who weren’t getting airplay” (New Society, Jan 1985). The record was issued by Natalie Records and was co-funded Merseyside County Council.
